Social distance

Calculation area social distance

To determine how many people approximately "fit" into an area, the size of the selected area is divided by the required area size per person. Required means: no overlap with another person within 1.5 metres. An important assumption is that it is calculated from the centre point of the person. So the body itself is not included in the 1.5 meters. To calculate the required area of a person in the application, two methods have been applied: square and hexagon. Both methods are explained below.

Note: This is a theoretical approach to maximum capacity. In reality, the movement of people and rounding differences will have to be taken into account. This is also the reason why you can enter a mutual distance in the application as an option. This in order to possibly create a margin that takes the above aspects into account.

Square approach

In this method, the assumption is that persons stand in a square in relation to each other, see attached picture. With this approach, each person has 1.5m x 1.5m = 2.25m² at his disposal.

Hexagon approach

In this method the assumption is made that persons stand in a triangle in relation to each other, see attached picture. With this approach, each person has a hexagon at his disposal. For the calculation of a regular hexagon, the following formula has been used:

Here a equals 2 x tan(30°) * 0.75 ≈ 0.866m

Area A is then rounded off 1.95m²
