Maastricht is taking a significant step in the digitalization of city management and visitor management with the introduction of a Digital Twin, developed by Argaleo. This innovative platform, launched by Centrummanagement Maastricht (CMM), Vereniging Eigenaren Binnenstad Maastricht (VEBM) and Maastricht Marketing, provides insight into visitor flows and crowding at various locations in the city. This contributes to a well-organized, welcoming and future-ready city.

“The Digital Twin helps us keep the center of Maastricht livable and attractive. Thanks to data-driven insights, we can support the sustainable development of the city center and work together toward a city that is ready for the future for entrepreneurs, visitors and residents.” Says Astrid Verberne, Director of Centrummanagement Maastricht

With the deployment of the Digital Twin, Maastricht becomes one of the frontrunners in the Netherlands in data-driven city management. The technology makes it possible to monitor visitor flows and respond more effectively to crowding and mobility based on data. This helps entrepreneurs, policymakers, administrators and event organizers to optimally design the city for both residents and visitors.

“With the launch of the Digital Twin, we can better position Maastricht and promote sustainable tourism. By analyzing visitor flows in detail, we can respond to the needs of different target groups and better distribute crowding. This creates a more pleasant experience for visitors, residents and entrepreneurs alike. Together, we are working toward a sustainable and future-ready economy for Maastricht, making optimal use of the unique qualities of our city.” Says Leontien Mees, Director of Maastricht Marketing

Importance for the city

The Digital Twin enables Maastricht to proactively manage visitor crowding, visitor routing, safety and accessibility. By linking various data sources, such as mobile data and weather information, administrators and policymakers can better anticipate developments and take targeted measures. This is important not only for a pleasant and welcoming city center, but also for balanced distribution of visitors and a sustainable economic climate.

“A smart and dynamic city center is crucial for entrepreneurship in Maastricht. With this technology, we gain concrete tools to make visitor flows transparent, better understand them, and make our city even more attractive for property owners and investors in commercial real estate.” Says Stefan van Aarle, Chair of VEBM
