The kick-off of the NWO-funded AI Compass project took place recently at the Rotterdam Stadion (Feyenoord Stadion). In this project, 27 authorities, companies, and universities are working together to develop responsible AI applications for crowd management. Argaleo is one of the key technology partners, contributing its Digitwin expertise to help create ethical and effective AI systems for public safety.
Why responsible AI matters
As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly important in managing public spaces and crowd safety, questions about ethics and accountability become critical. The AI Compass project addresses these concerns by bringing together diverse stakeholders—government agencies, technology companies, research institutions, and civil society—to develop AI applications that are not only effective but also transparent, fair, and accountable to the public.
Real-world applications
The AI Compass project focuses on practical applications in crowd management. Participating authorities are testing AI-enhanced Digitwin systems to improve crowd flow monitoring, predict potential safety issues, and optimize emergency response. These real-world experiments help ensure that AI systems work as intended and don’t create unintended negative consequences.
Building trust in AI
For AI to be widely adopted in public safety and crowd management, the public must trust these systems. The AI Compass project includes education and transparency initiatives to help citizens understand how AI is being used, what safeguards are in place, and how they can provide feedback if they have concerns.
