Helmond City Council, Argaleo and Monotch are joining forces within the Dutch Mobility Innovations (DMI) ecosystem to transform urban planning with innovative technology. Linking Argaleo's digital twin to the Urban Data Access Platform (UDAP) creates a data-rich environment that supports Helmond in making strategic, informed decisions. This collaboration offers a first in real-time city data and enables a more complete and up-to-date picture of the urban environment.
Real-time insight for policymakers
This integration allows policymakers and city planners to access real-time data on traffic, intersections and infrastructure within one user-friendly environment for the first time. "It is unique that policymakers can now see in one view what is happening in their city," said Paul Potters, Director of Smart Mobility at Monotch. "They now get clear insights into how infrastructure and traffic data affect urban safety and accessibility. This forms a solid basis for future-oriented policy decisions."
Optimal accessibility for emergency services
This data will give Helmond a better view of the effectiveness of emergency services, such as ambulance response times in compacted neighborhoods, among other things. "Helmond has to build substantially through infill development, which presents challenges for accessibility," says Luuk Misdom, Senior Project Leader Smart Mobility at the Municipality of Helmond. "These insights help us better assess whether, for example, ambulances can continue to get to their destinations within 15 minutes - crucial information for urban policy making."
Data as a foundation for a safer city
The technology allows traffic data and infrastructure information to be used proactively for urban development. For example, the digital twin makes visible where ambulances are quickly prioritized at smart traffic lights (iVRIs) and where improvements can be made. "The UDAP integration in our digital twin allows urban planners to work with visual and interactive data," said Jeroen Steenbakkers, director and owner of Argaleo. "It allows us to make data really useful for strategic planning in conjunction with other data sources."
International recognition and forward-looking vision
At the Smart City Expo Congress in Barcelona in early November, this project was demonstrated and received with enthusiasm. Dutch municipalities can now use this technology to purposefully shape the future of urban mobility and safety. This collaboration not only offers new opportunities for Digital Twin technology and C-ITS platforms, but also inspires other cities to embrace data-driven urban planning.
