DMI presents first integrated dashboard for smart cities at Smart City Expo Barcelona

The Dutch Metropolitan Innovations (DMI) ecosystem is launching the first integrated dashboard for cities at the Smart City World Expo in Barcelona. Future Insight, Argaleo and Cap Gemini are presenting this dashboard, which helps cities gain insight into their performance on smart, sustainable urbanization. By bringing together data from different sources and existing dashboards, cities will soon be able to better visualize their performance at different levels. This first dashboard is an important step in making cities, neighborhoods and districts measurable. In the coming period, DMI will further develop the dashboard

Large-scale challenges for cities in the Netherlands

Cities in the Netherlands face major challenges when it comes to smart and sustainable urbanization. Think of inner-city building, the concept of the 15-minute city and climate adaptation. Many cities have included these goals in their environmental visions to ensure long-term livability. Because many of these challenges are similar between municipalities, there is an increasing need for cooperation, including with the state

Blueprint for coherent understanding

To support cities, stakeholders have created a Blueprint with eight domains: Housing, Spatial Planning, Traffic and Mobility, Energy and Climate, Environment and Ecology, Circularity, Safety and Health. Measurable goals and actions were formulated for each domain. Although national, publicly available databases exist for some themes, they are still lacking for others. This dashboard provides policymakers with an integrated overview with which to guide the transition to smart and sustainable cities.

Continued development of the Dashboard

After this first step, the parties involved will continue to develop the dashboard:

  • More ambitions and actions are provided with measurable indicators (KPIs);
  • Additional national databases are being linked;
  • There will be new data files for KPIs for which there is currently no data;
  • Additional expertise is added for deeper insight and analysis.

This broad approach, with attention to different scales (city, neighborhood, district) and statistical relationships, reveals where trends are occurring and where policy can be focused.

Ease of use and visual analysis

The dashboard allows users to visualize data and compare cities with each other, down to the district and neighborhood level. Users can select, zoom and analyze specific data to make targeted, informed decisions. The tool also allows cities to compare their position with other municipalities and track national trends, enabling collaboration and knowledge sharing between cities.

Smart City World Expo & Congress

During the Smart City World Expo in Barcelona, Future Insight, Argaleo and Cap Gemini will give an interactive demo of the DMI Dashboard. The parties can be found at the TeamNL pavilion and the DMI ecosystem in Hall 3, D21 starting Tuesday, Nov. 5.
