Delft University of Technology and Argaleo are joining forces to build a digital model of the energy network. In Argaleo’s digital twin platform, a digital replica of the campus electricity network is being developed. This creates a dashboard that provides real-time insight into energy consumption and makes it possible to experiment in a virtual environment and analyze future scenarios.

Dr. Pedro Vergara Barrios, assistant professor of the Intelligent Electrical Power Grids (IEPG) group at TU Delft, and Jeroen Steenbakkers, CEO and founder of Argaleo, recently kicked off the collaboration project. The link between the actual energy system and the digital copy will be realized in the coming months. After that, energy consumption will be shown in real-time in the dashboard, while an intelligent digital calculation model developed by the researchers runs in the background.

Ultimately, self-learning algorithms will be integrated into the platform to assess system performance and develop insights that support decision-making regarding future energy networks. “We benefit from the high level of digitization of our infrastructure on the campus and combine TU Delft’s expertise with Argaleo’s digital twin technology to develop the first digital model of its kind in the Netherlands,” Vergara says.

In the future, a broader virtual model will be developed, in which other energy carriers (such as gas, heat, etc.) are integrated. With the use of the platform, the ambition is to become internationally leading in the development of digital models for energy systems for real-time decision-making and planning. The campus of TU Delft will be set up as a European test site for research in digital energy projects.
