The Netherlands faces major challenges in keeping our cities, villages and regions livable and sustainable. We can only address these if we also seize the opportunities that digitalization and technology offer, in a democratic way. That is why Argaleo joined 58 partners in the next phase of the City Deal ‘Creating a Smart City, Here’s How’.
Over the past two years, 63 partners have been working together in the City Deal ‘Creating a Smart City, Here’s How’. Together, they aim to harness the opportunities of digitalization and technology to keep regions, cities and villages livable and socially strong, and to strengthen democracy.
A large smart city network ready to take the next step
Successfully so, as 16 new tools have been developed that make it easier to implement smart city solutions. Among them is the Crowd Safety Manager. A toolbox has been set up containing over 250 tools, and more than one and a half million euros in (European) subsidies have been secured. But above all, the partners have discovered over the past years that they can rely on each other’s expertise, creating greater momentum for innovation. A large and solid smart city network has emerged that wants to take major steps in the years ahead.
Project leader Jan-Willem Wesselink is satisfied with the next step. ‘We have laid a strong foundation to seize the opportunities that digitalization and technology can offer cities, villages and regions. Now we need to turn those opportunities into value. It is great to see that the partners want to continue with that.’

At the same time, a letter of intent was signed with DigiGo, Impactcoalitie Safety & Security, the Retailagenda, the U-Tech Community and the Urban Innovation Development network (in formation) to explore how to collaborate more effectively. Wesselink: ‘The Netherlands faces enormous challenges. We have a major housing demand and simultaneously a substantial sustainability challenge.’
City Deals
City Deals are part of Agenda Stad, the intergovernmental program in which cities, civic partners and the national government collaborate to strengthen innovation in Dutch cities.
