An international consortium of twenty organizations has won a new Horizon Europe project called EMERALDS. The project will develop a mobility data toolset that makes processing and analyzing large data streams significantly easier. In addition to TU Delft and Argaleo, the Dutch partners Mobility Innovation Centre Delft and Arane are part of the consortium, and the municipalities of The Hague and Utrecht serve as pilot cities for the project. The total project budget is five million euros, of which seven hundred thousand is available for the Dutch partners.
Every day, many terabytes of mobility data become available in cities, covering cars, public transport, bicycles, air quality and more. That is valuable, but this data only becomes useful when it can be properly processed and analyzed. The goal of the new European project EMERALDS is to create a toolset, Mobility Analytics as a Service (MAaaS), that makes working with data significantly easier.

Managing, analyzing and visualizing data
The toolset will enable road authorities and other stakeholders to collect and manage data of large volume, high velocity and great variety. Additionally, the toolset supports online and offline analysis of this data, enables predictions and visualizes results in a digital twin. All of these services will comply with strict European legislation at every level of the architecture.
The project starts in January 2023. The Department of Transport & Planning of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Geosciences and MICD at TU Delft will work closely with digital twin provider Argaleo and traffic consultants Arane to develop the toolset. The toolset will be tested in the pilot cities of Utrecht and The Hague.
