I4Trust selects international consortium for smart city platform development

In an international consortium of 8 parties, including Argaleo, an open platform with digital twin is developed to support cities and suppliers in scaling up smart city solutions. The SLAM project has been selected by I4Trust as a showcase for effective and reliable data sharing. It gives cities control over IoT solutions in public spaces, provides businesses with new opportunities and creates more liveable, sustainable and inclusive cities for all.

Promises about the opportunities that data offers for cities are plentiful. Data from IoT assets in public spaces can make processes more efficient, improve services and contribute to liveable, sustainable, inclusive cities. Many solutions are already available. At the same time, the technological possibilities raise questions of justification. For example, about data ownership, privacy, ethics and security. To break the deadlock, an approach that is open and transparent is needed.

A consortium of eight companies has joined forces in the I4Trust programme to solve this and build the Smart Lamppost Asset Marketplace (SLAM). The aim is to develop an integrated, open platform that provides insight into all service processes, enables secure data sharing and offers a catalogue of solutions. It is based on standards from FIWARE, TM Forum and iSHARE and enables every IoT vendor and public authority to exploit the full potential of smart city solutions.

SLAM

Smart lampposts are interesting in many ways and for years have held out a promising prospect as a multifunctional device that combines sensors, cameras, EV charging and more. There are about 3.5 million lampposts in the Netherlands. More efficient use of existing infrastructure, connectivity and electricity create a win-win situation. The reality is that there are organisational and financial barriers and legitimate concerns about privacy, ethics, ownership, standards and interdependencies.

SLAM provides insight for both cities and businesses. Cities know exactly what is implemented and which lamppost is used by whom. Companies get insight into what is allowed at what location and what criteria and conditions apply. Such as Privacy Impact Assessments, registration in a sensor register, mandatory certifications, compliance with (spatial) legislation and use of open APIs, standards and data models for sharing data. Creating an open, transparent ecosystem helps engage citizens, enables new business models, and addresses the legitimate concerns of government agencies.

The partners in the SLAM consortium cover the entire value chain. WeCity is developing the integrated catalogue, marketplace and service portal, using Sensative and Civity for the FIWARE-based and iSHARE-compliant data sharing infrastructure and HubLogiq for their IoT expertise. Sensoterra, Teneo and Mobility Sensing will provide sensors for SLAM to test the data and service management processes. Argaleo will integrate the 3D model of smart lampposts and display relevant data in a digital twin. With the help of Startup Utrecht, the community will be used to grow the ecosystem.

With SLAM, we connect the dots: more relevant data, better data exchange between stakeholders, more suitable, innovative solutions and easy scaling up to other assets in public space. And above all, we are building an open and reliable ecosystem that is beneficial to both suppliers and government bodies.
