Digitwin op geo-inspiratiedagen

The Ministry of the Interior (DiS Geo and BRO), Kadaster/PDOK and Geonovum are organizing four geo-inspiration days in 2021. During these geo-inspiration days, creators and users of (geo-)data provide updates on current developments, share inspiring practical examples, highlight key considerations and offer the opportunity to catch up with each other.

The first geo-inspiration day takes place on 20 April. Between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM, various sessions will bring you up to speed on current developments. What is being worked on? How are different organizations using digital twins? What is and is not possible with digital twins? How difficult is it to actually build a digital twin? And what are the key considerations?

One of the sessions is a presentation by Sascha Hoogendoorn-Lanser, Director of the Mobility Innovation Centre Delft, and Jeroen Steenbakkers from Argaleo about the development of a digital twin of the TU Delft campus.

With the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 1.5-meter society was introduced. When we are close together for extended periods, the coronavirus spreads faster. The same applies when we travel frequently. But how do we know where or when it is too crowded? Can we predict this crowding? And what can we do to better distribute traffic flows? We are researching this at TU Delft in a unique location: our own campus. In addition to various open data sources on mobility, we have installed a specially designed privacy-safe sensor system that collects data on the movements of cyclists and pedestrians. All data is visualized in the Campus Mobility Dashboard, a Digital Twin of the university campus.

The data can be used in the short term to inform campus management about crowding developments, identify critical locations and assess to what extent the 1.5-meter distance is feasible. These types of insights can be useful in many different ways, such as scheduling lecture timetables, introducing one-way traffic on bicycle paths, advising people to take quieter routes, travel at different times or use alternative modes of transport. The sensor network and the digital twin are intended to grow into a full-fledged Mobility Lab for scientific research.
