Digital Twinning for complex urban challenges

The Digital City Program is the first program of the Urban Development Initiative (UDI), launching on February 5 in collaboration with approximately 20 partners from industry (including Argaleo), government, and education. The program focuses on digital solutions for integrated and sustainable urban planning through digital twinning and virtual reality. In a digital twin, the physical city is digitally reconstructed. Potential interventions in the real environment can then first be designed and tested digitally to assess their effects. These policy-supporting instruments help make complex urban challenges comprehensible in an integrated way.

This makes it an effective instrument for co-creation and decision-making within government institutions and in coordination with their partners, while also explicitly contributing to improving citizen participation. This approach saves time and money and leads to greater support for the choices to be made. Projects such as Eindhoven Internationale Knoop XL and Brainport Smart District serve as showcases where digital solutions are applied. Together with the partners and other interested parties, the program will be further developed over the coming six months, after which it will launch around the summer of 2021 and the implementation phase will begin.

Urban Development Initiative

The collaboration within the Urban Development Initiative (UDI), initiated by the municipalities of Eindhoven and Helmond, Brainport Development, and TU/e together with Germany’s Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, aims to provide integrated and innovative answers to complex urban challenges in the region. This contributes to improving the quality of living, working, and staying, both now and in the future. By collaborating on a number of themes with a large number of other parties from industry and the (semi-)public sector, ecosystems with significant innovative power are created. This enables innovative solutions to be developed faster and more efficiently in the region, and subsequently scaled up.
