In collaboration with Ruimteschepper KennisKring, Argaleo is organizing an inspiration session in which leading organizations discuss innovative applications of Digital Twins. The rise of Digital Twins has only just begun, and many will already be amazed by the possibilities. It is especially interesting to explore these from an entirely different angle than the Geo/3D/BIM perspective. In this session, the users and themes listed below are featured, all based on the same principles. What surprised them, and what has the twin approach delivered?

With the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 1.5-meter society was introduced. When we are close together for extended periods, the coronavirus spreads faster. The same applies when we travel frequently. But how do we know where or when it is too crowded? Can we predict this crowding? And what can we do to better distribute traffic flows? We are researching this at TU Delft in a unique location: our own campus. In addition to various open data sources on mobility, we have installed a specially designed privacy-safe sensor system that collects data on the movements of cyclists and pedestrians. All data is visualized in the Campus Mobility Dashboard, a Digital Twin of the university campus.

The data can be used in the short term to inform campus management about crowding developments, identify critical locations and assess to what extent the 1.5-meter distance is feasible. These types of insights can be useful in many different ways, such as scheduling lecture timetables, introducing one-way traffic on bicycle paths, advising people to take quieter routes, travel at different times or use alternative modes of transport. The sensor network and the digital twin are intended to grow into a full-fledged Mobility Lab for scientific research.

The modern city is characterized by the pursuit of a perfect balance between economic accessibility, an environmentally friendly and livable city for its residents and visitors. While this ambition often sounds strategic, in practice the challenge lies in actually shaping these goals. The Logistics Community Brabant has developed the digital Atlas concept within a Digital Twin to facilitate dialogue between policymakers and entrepreneurs, while also activating the knowledge of research institutions. It is precisely the combination of public, enriched accessibility data and private data that makes it possible to create an up-to-date picture of today’s city, enabling a dialogue about the city of tomorrow. During the presentation, Joost discusses the ideas behind the Atlas, the practical implementations achieved so far, and the exploration of tomorrow’s questions.
